Challenges facing digital media in the Arab world
The present new Digital Communication Revolution is the fourth in history. It follows three other Communications Revolutions: The Alphabet (1500 B.C.), the Printing Press (1439 A.D.), and the Electronic (1835 A.D.). Digitalization allowed for the coming of globalization. The World Wide Web at present connects 40% of world population allowing them to interact. At the same time, multinational media and advertising corporations, stationed mainly in the Center States, market their products in Marginal States, in a manner that favors Electronic Colonialism, and encourage consumerism. On the other hand, the present media revolution helped create an Arab Spring. Thus the main question this paper tackles is: what is the nature of the present media climate in Arab Countries, and what are the challenges that face its growth. The paper ends with presenting 12 such challenges.
